Safaris

Kenya is probably best known for its national parks and reserves. From the vast Tsavo East National Park to the Shimba Hills, a mere 20 minutes from Maweni, roughly 10% of Kenya’s area is protected.

Most visitors come in search of the “Big 5” (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo), but there are a vast number of other animals to see.Elephants

Whilst a guide to what to see, and where to see it, is beyond the scope of this web page, we do suggest that you at least visit the Shimba Hills during your stay at Maweni Beach Cottages. One of the smaller national parks, it is famous for the Sable Antelope, the only place in Kenya where they are still present.

The park is also a must for hobby ornithologists, with Fischer´s Turaco a personal favourite.

A little bit further away, in the Tsavo East National Park, lies the Tarhi Camp. Recently opened, this tented camp is located by the banks of the Voi river. Just a few minutes from Voi, the camp is ideal for a night’s stopover from and to Nairobi. The camp can be contacted at kedev@africaonline.co.ke .
